AL Play In Game #1 - Brewers 2, Red Sox 1 (11 inn)

Milwaukee County Stadium
Brett vs Fossum
Brewers 2, Red Sox 1 (11 inn)

With a 3 way tie for the final Wild Card spot in the AL Boston drew the shortest straw and headed toward Beer town to face the Brew Crew.  Goose eggs were posted through 5 innings of play.  Then in the 6th the Bosox threatened to blow the game wide open.  With bases loaded and one out Bob Watson blasted a ball that would have wound up in Landsdowne Street.  Instead future HOF'er Robin Yount was about to track it down against the wall in left center.  Dewey Evans, who singled with one out, strolled home to give Boston a 1-0 lead.  When Yaz flied out to shallow center the rally was snuffed.  Boston missed a golden chance.  1-0 leads are tenuous at best and this one had a chance to make it across the finish line until Greg Brook hit a 2-2 pitch with 2 outs to tie the game a one all.  Milwaukee was litterally down to their last strike, but Urbina couldn't close the door.  The game went to extra innings and again Boston threatened with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Yaz again came up small and ended the inning with a comebacker.  Milwaukee did nothing in the bottom of the 10th and Boston followed suit in the top of the 11th.  With an 0-2 count reliever Tim Wakefield threw a knuckler to Ernest Riles that never knuckled.  Riles kept his hands back and hit the wounded duck 325 feet down the line for a walk of homer.  Reliever Frank Linzy (4-0) threw a clean 10th inning to grab the win and send the Brew Crew to the second play in game vs the Oakland A's.
