Game 1
Mets 2 Astros 1 10 innings
Tim Teufel tied the game at 1 with a solo HR in the 6th.
The Mets won it in the bottom of the 10th on a single by Dave
Magadan, scoring Mookie Wilson. Tug McGraw (1-0) got the win in relief and
reliever Frank DiPino (0-1) took the loss. Both starting pitchers were terrific
as Houston’s Jim Desahies went 8 innings allowing only 4 hits, striking out 8. For
the Mets, Jim McAndrew pitched 9 innings, allowed only 3 hits, walked only 1
and fanned 6.
Game 2
Mets 8 Astros 0
An easy win for the Mets as they pummel Houston starter and loser
Danny Darwin (0-1) who gives up 6 runs in 4 innings. The Mets scored four in
the second, sending 10 men to the plate. Mackey Sasser doubled in the first run
and Lenny Dykstra, Wally Backman and Dave Magadan each singled in a run.
Starting and winning pitcher Ray Sadecki helped his own cause in the third with
an RBI single. Strawberry homered in the 4th to make it 6-0. The
Mets added two insurance runs in the 6th.
Dykstra was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 SBs. Magadan was 3-5 with
2 RBIs, Sasser had 2 doubles. Kevin Elster struck out 4 times.
Sadecki (2-0) pitched a complete game 3 hit shutout with 4 walks
and 5 Ks
Game 3
Astros 4 Mets 3 12 innings
In a classic matchup, Mike Scott started against Tom Seaver. And
with Scott throwing 7 shutout innings (5 Ks) the Astros took a 2-0 lead into
the 9th. With their ace closer, Dave Smith on the mound, the Stros
could not hold the lead as the pesky Mets rallied to tie the game. Kevin
McReynolds hit a solo HR (2) leading off to make it 2-1. Lenny Dykstra’s sac
fly later in the inning tied the game and sent it to extra innings.
In the 12th, the Mets took the lead when McReynolds
singled in Backman. With Tug McGraw on to save it in the bottom of the 12th,
Houston rallied. Roger Cedeno walked with one out and took second on a balk by
McGraw. He came on to score on a single by Bill Spiers. With 2 out and 2 on,
Lance Berkman came through with a single scoring Spiers to give the Astros a
thrilling win.
Aurelio Lopez (1-0) got the win in relief. McGraw took the loss
(1-1). Seaver went 6 innings and struck out 10 while allowing 2 runs. Danny
Frisella and Ron Taylor combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief (3
Hits). For Houston, after Scott pitched his 7 shutout innings, Larry Andersen
pitched a scoreless 8th, before Smith blew the save (1) in the 9th.
Matt Keough then came on and gave up the lead run in the 12th before
Lopez came on to get the final out of the inning- setting the stage for the
Astros come back win.
Mets are now 7-7, in the middle of the pack in the NL East. Next
week they play 1-10 San Diego. Houston is now 9-5 and leads the NL West
